Banak is 14-years old who hails from Tuei and lives in Juba, all in South Sudan. He arrived in Ghana on May 25, 2019 and had a successful surgery on November 12, 2019. Banak is still recuperating and is currently undergoing physiotherapy at FOCOS Hospital.
Dennis is 7 years old and was born on June 5, 2013. He is a Sierra Leonean, born and raised in Freetown. His surgery was performed on July 2, 2019, which was followed by a quick and successful recovery. Dennis is currently back in his home country, preparing to return to school.
Dase is 6 years old who hails from Sekoru Awaso, a town in Ethiopia. She was born on March 17, 2013 and lives with her family in Addis Ababa. She arrived in Ghana on July 14, 2018 for Orthopaedic care in FOCOS. Dase had a halo application, followed by a series of staged surgeries of which the last was done on May 21, 2019. Thanks to the great nursing care and physiotherapy sessions, Dase has recovered and returned to her home country.
Elaine is 16 years old and was born on December 12, 2003. She lives with her family in Nairobi, Kenya. Elaine arrived in Ghana in June 2019 to undergo Orthopaedic surgery at FOCOS. Elaine had a successful surgery on August 6, 2019 which was followed by a smooth recovery. She has since returned to her home country to continue with her high school education.
Prince is a 24-year old Ghanaian who hails from Asuboye in the Eastern Region. He lives with his parents and siblings. He had a successful surgery on August 27, 2019, which was followed by a difficult recovery. Overcoming the challenges, Prince is now back in school to continue with his Junior High school education. Prince now lives with high spirits and is so full of confidence.
Bismark is 11 years old who lives and hails from Oti in the Oti Region of Ghana. He lives with his mother and siblings and was brought to FOCOS courtesy of Joy fm. The Joy team also published his story and solicited funding from the general public to finance his bill. Bismark had his first surgery on August 15, 2019 and the second and final one on October 8, 2019, which was followed by a steady and remarkable recovery. He is currently back in Oti preparing to join his friends in school.
Mohammed is 24 years old and hails from Makeni in Sierra Leone. Growing up and surviving as an orphan, Mohammed learned petty trading in order to make ends meet. On June 12, 2019, Mohammed was operated on at the FOCOS Hospital by courtesy of Mr. Tom Johnson and the African Surgery Incorporated (ASI). He is currently back in Sierra Leone to continue with his trade.
Tigist is 30 years old who hails from Gondar in Ethiopia. She had her surgery on August 14, 2014 and had a smooth recovery. Tigist currently works for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Commission (AJJDC), a Jewish relief organization in Ethiopia that support people living with scoliosis to have life-saving surgeries at FOCOS Hospital in Ghana. She acts as a liaison between staff and patients, helps in translation, gives care and also assists in the necessary paper work.
