Gary Cournoyer
- Scoliosis Advocate
“Accepting the limitations of scoliosis, both before and after surgery, has been my most difficult obstacle.”
At ten years old, Gary Cournoyer was diagnosed with scoliosis, but the condition didn’t really impact his daily existence until later in life.
Once the curve began to increase and pain became more of a factor, Gary was forced to grapple with limitations that having a curved spine placed on him. He stayed motivated, during this period, by changing his routine and taking out things that were difficult while trying to enjoy different activities that he could still participate in with appreciation.
Based on his own experiences, Gary would like to see more options available for earlier medical intervention in progressing spinal curvatures for adult patients. He experienced delays and limitations on treatment options due to barriers placed by health insurance when seeking surgery.
His advice to those who have just received their scoliosis diagnosis: “Try to look at the positives more than the negatives. There are so many gains through the treatment and eventually the surgery but sometimes we dwell on what we can’t do. Nothing gained by this.”
Gary shared that within his community, his personal experience with scoliosis has been both educational and enlightening. After his back surgery, not only did his friends notice how much straighter he stood and the increase in his functionality, but they were amazed that he had become two inches taller.
He credits his scoliosis journey with helping him appreciate the positives in daily life. Accepting his condition allowed him to persevere & overcome limitations with gratitude. Post-surgery, Gary is happy to be walking his dogs more & more importantly pain free.
“I guess I see myself as a walking ambassador of this condition and how you can improve your quality of life.”
